Aquarium of Rhodes

The building of the Hydrobiology Station of Rhodes was constructed between 1934 and 1936. It has served as Reale Instituto di Ricerche Biologiche di Rodi since 1937. In 1945 it was renamed to Greek Hydrobiological Institute and operated under the supervision of the Academy of Athens. Today it functions like a Museum-Aquarium and research facility and it belongs to the National Centre for Marine Research.

Its goal is the preservation and promotion of embalmed and live exhibits of the Mediterranean Sea. In the aquarium you can see mollusks gastropods and cephalopods, crustaceans, Echinoderms, and fish of the fish families of Dasyatidae, Muraenidae, Serranidae, Mullidae, Sparidae, Centrachantidae, Labridae, Scaridae, Siganidae, Mugilidae, Scorpaenidae, Triglidae, Balistidae, Monacanthidae, and sea turtles. Furthermore, in the museum you can see invertebrates, sharks and other fish species and monk seals.
