The monastery of Panagia Filerimos

The ancient city of Ialysos is built around the hill of Filerimos. Here you can see the Acropolis of Ialysos as well as the temple of Athena Polias (2nd or 3rd century BC) with the statue of Athena in its interior. During the Frankish period the Medieval Catholic Church and the Monastery of Panagia Filerimos were built here.

The painting of Panagia Filerimos was the most sacred relic of the Order of the Knights. It is said that it was painted by Saint Luke, was transferred to Rhodes from Jerusalem and was placed in a crypt at Filerimos which is known today as the Chapel of Saint George.

In the Southwestern area of Filerimos you can walk down the path named “Witness” or “Golgotha”. This road was built by Latin Priests and it represents the steps that the Lord took as he ascended Golgotha. The path leads to a small square with a cross in its middle.

East of the hill there are some remnants of walls of the Byzantine period which were repaired by the knights. You can go to the Monastery of Panagia Filerimos on foot through a fragrant pine forest. On your way you can stop to rest at the new Monastery of Prophet Elias.
