Kallithea Springs

Kallithea Springs are the most important architectural achievement in the Dodecanese during the Italian occupation. The project was designed by commander of the Dodecanese Mario Lago (1924-1936) while the architect of the project was Pietro Lombardi. The complex was built on the east side of the island (10 km. far from the city), on the exact same site that was the landing of the first Italian forces on the island. The road leading to Kallithea Springs was finished in 1928 and the official inauguration of the site took place on July 1st, 1929. The complex consists of three parts:

  1. The main entrance with the large circular plaza and the fountain.
  2. The semicircular patio with the water source in its middle.
  3. The area of the toilets and other sanitary facilities.

All this is surrounded by gardens, parks, trails and various recreation areas, including a cave, a pier, a dance floor etc. All kinds of constructions that took place in the area happened with respect to the natural landscape. Therefore, the buildings’ volumes were adapted to the natural cavities and the architectural elements are a combination of the different cultures that contributed to Rhodes (Doric, Roman, Byzantine, Knights, Arab, insular). Today, the building is abandoned.
